It has been more than two years since the 68-year-old actress, who plays Queen Vic landlady Peggy Mitchell, was forced to leave the show to battle the debilitating Epstein-Barr virus.

"I hadn't been happy for a while at EastEnders because I felt so tired all the time," Barbara recalled in the Daily Mirror. "It wasn't the show, it was me. I hadn't realised how ill I was."

Crediting 42-year-old husband Scott with helping her recuperate her health during the lengthy break, the perennial star is ready to get back to work, signing a one-year contract with the soap.

Barbara hopes that the coming months will see a new lustre for the long-running programme, despite the fact it has recently lost a number key players. "I love EastEnders and I owe them so much," she said. "It's all going to work out just fine."
