The show, broadcast to 100 countries, capped three days of celebrations in the Norwegian capital, and included musical entertainment from top recording artists such as Westlife, Sugababes, Duran Duran and Katherine Jenkins.
At a ceremony the previous evening Crown Prince Haakon was seen congratulating Mohamed El Baradei, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, after his organisation received the Peace prize for trying to rid the planet of the threat of nuclear arms.
Meanwhile, in Sweden, Crown Princess Victoria and Princess Madeleine lent a touch of glamour to the proceedings as their father King Carl Gustaf handed out awards to winners in the fields of medicine, physics, chemistry and economics. Veteran playwright Harold Pinter won the literature prize, but was too ill to attend in person. The event was followed by a glittering banquet for 1,300 guests in Stockholm's city hall. |
