Some of her famous and powerful interviewees have become friends, like Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who was one of the first to phone her when news of her departure leaked out.

Among her favourites is Joan Collins, whom she describes as "a true professional with a brilliant sense of humour". "I'll go and see Joan in the dressing room and she'll be asking her husband Percy how she looks," the presenter told the Daily Mirror. "He's there tweaking at her hair making sure she looks fabulous."
