Sarah-Jane Crawford is a busy girl – so busy she chats to hellomagazine.com while catching up on errands in her Notting Hill stomping ground. Hailed as 'one to watch' in 2009, the 25-year-old, who's charmed the Pussycat Dolls and Robert de Niro, talks about her career highlights and reveals her plans for Valentine's Day.

You've interviewed some major stars. Who was your favourite?

"Well, it was just great to be in the presence of Robert De Niro. Because I was interviewing him with the writer of a film he co-wrote and starred in, he didn't say that much.

"I don't think he's someone who's interested in trying to sell. He just sat there smiling really and was just very sweet, trying his best to answer the questions."

What about Sarah Jessica Parker?

"Oh, the Sex And The City girls really put a smile on my face. They were so lovely. I made sure I wore something quite edgy because I thought I'm in the company of fashionistas, I have to make an effort.

"They were saying: 'Oh I love your dress and your shoes'. Kim Cattrall said: 'You really should get into modelling'. I'm sure she was just trying to be sweet!"

We've heard that you're a girl after their own hearts as you have a bit of a vintage clothing habit….

"I live near Portobello Road and every Friday there's a market with lovely bits and pieces. I always create a reason for getting new clothes. The other day in Selfridges I bought a dress which was reduced from £500 to £80, thinking 'there's bound to be an event where I can wear it'!"

Aside from presenting, you also deejay on BBC 1Xtra which specialises in black music. What kind of music can listeners expect from you?

"I'm covering for (R&B expert) Trevor Nelson on his breakfast show for a week this month. So (we play) superstars like Usher, Rihanna and Chris Brown, as well as new UK hip hop artists and reggae.

"But my own musical upbringing was quite diverse. I was brought up listening to Buddy Holly, The Beatles, Dire Straits."

Turning to your childhood, you moved from inner city London to Cambridge aged 12. That must have been quite a contrast…

"Yes, I went from a school that was very mixed to a school where me and my brother were the only black kids. It was nice to see the two sides of the coin."

Family seems to be very important to you…

"Well, after my father died when I was eight my mum remarried and went on to have two more kids, so it's quite a big family. And I don't think I've spent a Christmas away from them even though I live in London now."

And is it true that you often take your gran biscuits?

"Yes, she's 98. She always spoilt me as a child and was my favourite nan."

You're currently single… Do you have any special plans for Valentine's Day?

"I haven't really thought about it. Last year I was out on a bit of date having dinner in Chelsea and it was quite nice. One of my friends - her boyfriend's off in Canada – did say to me yesterday: 'What are you doing for Valentine's Day?'. It's (in the run-up to) Fashion Week so it might be that there's a party going on. I'll probably be there."

Looking at your MySpace page you're quite an Obama fan…

"It meant a lot on so many levels. I was so excited (after the election) I was buzzing for days.

"Things that people thought couldn't happen did, and psychologically a lot of people now can't tell themselves: 'I can't do this because there are so many barriers'."
