From Darcy to King George: why Hollywood's giving Colin the royal treatment

Brad Pitt is probably better known for his devastating good looks, while Johnny Depp may have more raffish charisma.

But Colin Firth has proved he can hold his own against any of Tinseltown’s most desirable leading men.

So what is it about the Hampshire-born star - who is now a prime contender for an Oscar and recently received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame - that has hearts aflutter?

Colin’s path to glory started with the role of Mr Darcy in the BBC’s 1995 adaptation of Jane Austen classic Pride and Prejudice

His brooding, misunderstood character won the nation over.

And many of his followers still remember with pleasure the iconic 'swimming' scene.

In it, the hero emerges from a lake, dripping wet, his shirt clinging to him, after taking a dip fully clothed, thereby revealing for the first time the passion lurking under the cool exterior.
