Snakes, spiders and scorching Kenyan sun: stars battle the desert for Comic Relief

22 FEBRUARY 2011

Employing fancy footwork of a different kind, Strictly Come Dancing winner Kara Tointon has joined a host of kind-hearted celebrities putting their fitness to the test for Comic Relief.

Nine famous faces are currently taking part in The BT Red Nose Desert Trek, traversing across 100 kilometres of Kenya's Kaisut Desert in just five days.

The fearless trekkers - Ronni Ancona, Craig David, Lorraine Kelly, Scott Mills, Olly Murs, Dermot O’Leary, Nadia Sawalha, Peter White and Kara - will brave temperatures of up to 40 degrees in the day time, as well as a host of deadly snakes and spiders.

They are doing so to raise money for Comic Relief to help people in both Africa and the UK. In particular they are hoping to highlight the issues faced by those losing their sight – one of the team is blind BBC presenter Peter.

A documentary of the trek will be aired on BBC1 in the buildup to Red Nose Day on March 18.
