David Beckham fans hurt in stampede at Chinese university

20 JUNE 2013

David Beckham has wished fans a "speedy recovery" as at least seven people were hurt in a stampede when they rushed to catch a glimpse of him on a visit to a Chinese university.

Shanghai police have revealed that three police officers, two university security guards and two students were injured.

Taking to his Facebook page to acknowledge the incident, reitred footballing star David wrote, "I had an incredible response from everyone at Shanghai Tongji University today, sorry I couldn't get out on the pitch to see the teams but it was impossible to get through the massive crowds.

"I heard there were a few injuries, I hope the fans are ok and I wish them a speedy recovery. Love David x."

Almost 1,000 fans had gathered at the stadium in Shanghai Tongji University, where the megastar was due to meet members of the university football team.

Excited fans rushed towards a gate when he arrived, breaking a line formed by police and guards.

Photos of the incident show people pushed onto the ground and a uniformed woman being carried away.

"Too crazy," said Chu Dan, one of the football players who was hoping to have "some interaction on the pitch" with David. "But we didn't expect so many people showing up here — too many fans of Beckham."

The event was cancelled, and Shanghai police said they are investigating the incident.
