Hugh Jackman reveals skin cancer news on Twitter

21 NOVEMBER 2013 Hugh Jackman revealed the news that he underwent treatment for skin cancer on Twitter.

The Wolverine actor shared an Instagram photo of himself on Thursday with a plaster on his nose and wrote that he had had a basal cell carcinoma, one of the most common forms of cancer.

He praised his wife Deborra-Lee Furness for urging him to seek medical attention.

"Deb said to get the mark on my nose checked," he wrote on his Instagram page. "Boy, was she right! I had a basil cell carcinoma."

The Australian actor was determined to put his fame to good use in order to raise awareness around the subject.

"Please don't be foolish like me," he said. "Get yourself checked. And USE sunscreen!!!"

According to skincancer.org, "BCCs are abnormal, uncontrolled growths or lesions that arise in the skin's basal cells, which line the deepest layer of the epidermis (the outermost layer of the skin)."

They are usually caused by "a combination of cumulative UV exposure and intense, occasional UV exposure."

Hugh, 45, joins a list of celebrities who have all spoken publicly about their brushes with cancer including Melanie Griffith, Ewan McGregor, Brooke Shields and Michelle Monaghan.
