The Columbian singer, who stars alongside Rihanna in the Can't Remember to Forget You video, said the point of it was to "take advantage of feeling sensual and feeling sexy".

The video, which features the two scantily clad singers on a bed together, has already racked up nearly two million views on YouTube.

"I feel that any woman who is in control, who is in touch with her femininity and sensuality, is a woman that is empowered," said Shakira. "I don't think that I put myself in any situation in which I am objectified."

The video also stars Rihanna

The 37-year-old vocalist was also full of praise for her co-star, describing 26-year-old Rihanna as "the sexiest woman on the planet", and adding "the chemistry was so good and so real. She taught me dance moves. She was a sweet teacher."

Shakira's defensive comments come a week after she revealed that her footballer boyfriend Gerard Piqué doesn't allow her to make music videos with men.

"He's very territorial," she told Billboard magazine. "And since he no longer lets me do videos with men, well, I have to do them with women."

While some criticised Gerard for banning men from his girlfriend's videos, the mother-of-one says it is fine by her.

"It's more than implied in our relationship that I can't do videos like I used to," she said. "It's out of the question - which I like, by the way."
