Scarlett Johansson has spoken about the challenge many mothers face — balancing work and family life.

The 29-year-old actress, who is engaged to French journalist Romain Dauriac and pregnant with the couple's first child, shared her thoughts on life, love, work and motherhood in the latest issue of Wall Street Journal magazine.

"It seems so stressful to not be able to spend time with your family because you're constantly chasing the tail of your own success," said Scarlett.

"There must exist a world in which I can balance those things, be able to raise a family and still make a film a year, or work on my own, develop things, do theatre."

"I want to be able to have it all," she laughed. "Selfishly."

The Avengers actress is currently working on the sequel of the superhero film, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and admitted that in the future, especially after her baby is born, she will have to compromise.

"I know that with that there will be some sacrifices," said Scarlett. "I know that's the struggle with working mothers and successful careers. It happens. With [male actors] it just doesn't happen that way. You can be every woman's fantasy, and nobody thinks twice about the fact that you have eight kids or whatever."

Scarlett and her producer Kevin Feige have previously said that the star's pregnancy wouldn't affect filming.

"My first reaction was I was very happy for her and very excited for her," said Kevin of Scarlett's baby news.

"My second reaction was we've got to move some pieces on the chess board around. But we didn't change the script at all, which is sort of the most important thing for us in terms of the storyline."

Scarlett confirmed her pregnancy in January, just six months after she got engaged to Romain. The couple have kept mum about their wedding plans, with Scarlett telling the publication, "Our life is quiet. Our plan is to get married at some point."

"I'm terrible at planning," she also admitted to Access Hollywood earlier this month. "Yeah, I'm not gonna plan anything — I like to wing it!"
