Usher: Getting married was my 'best mistake'

14 AUGUST 2014 Usher's marriage to Tameka Foster might not have had a fairytale ending – but the star has no regrets.

"Most people probably think I regret it because I ended up getting divorced, but it helped me learn that sometimes I think I know more than I actually do," the 35-year-old said.

Usher and stylist Tameka - who have two children together, Usher 'Cinco' Raymond V, now six, and five-year-old Naviyd Ely Raymond - tied the knot in Atlanta in 2007. Two years later, the couple went their separate ways.

They subsequently became involved in a three-year custody battle for their sons; in 2012, a judge awarded Usher primary custody

Now, family is more important than ever for The Voice judge.

He told the magazine that one of his favourite things to do is spend downtime with his loved ones - what he calls "red-cup celebrations".

"Everybody's hanging out on the lawn, drinking out of those plastic cups, eating fried chicken and dancing to loud old-school music," Usher said. "Sometimes the simpler the celebration, the better."

He also shared the best advice he has ever been given.

"'If you stay ready, you ain't gonna get ready.' James Brown told me that right before we performed together at the Grammys in 2005," he revealed.

"I've never forgotten it, and I'm always telling people, 'Well, James Brown once told me…'"
