Michael Schumacher's wife made a rare public appearance on Tuesday as she attended the World Equestrian Games in Caen, France, for which she is an official ambassador.

Corinna Schumacher put on a brave face for the outing, which comes almost exactly eight months after her husband's critical skiing accident in France.

The 45-year-old, who has been married to seven-time Formula One champion Michael for 19 years, looked at ease in a pair of blue jeans and khaki jacket as she smiled and chatted to fellow spectators.

An avid rider and horse-lover – she has raised horses at the couple's ranch in Texas and built it into a multi-million-pound business – Corinna was named as a key face of the championship last month.

In July, she spoke for the first time since her husband's accident in December last year to share the news that his condition is "getting better".

The Switzerland-born horserider said she has been encouraged by her husband's signs of recovery.

"It's getting better," she said. "Slowly certainly, but in any case it's improving."

Michael came out of a medically-induced coma in June and was moved from a hospital in Grenoble, France, to a rehab clinic closer to his Swiss home.

His wife, meanwhile, has reportedly spent millions turning part of the family mansion – where the couple reside with their two children – into a medical suite so that her husband can return home.

She also decided to sell her husband's private jet, which flew the retired Formula One driver between 300 and 400 hours a year around the world during his active career.

The jet, which still features Michael's initials on the tailplane, goes with a price tag of £15million.
