Giuliana Rancic and her husband Bill Rancic have always been open about their struggles with fertility. In a new interview, the TV star has shared the heartbreaking news that the couple have lost their final embryo. Giuliana and Bill are parents to son Duke, and had hoped to give him a sibling – but they learned on New Year’s Eve that their surrogate, who was pregnant with their third and final embryo, had miscarried."It was painful," the 40-year-old told People. "We were so optimistic with this last embryo. We thought, 'This is definitely going to work. This is our last shot.'"

Giuliana and Bill welcomed Duke via surrogate in 2012, leaving them with three remaining embryos. Two were successfully implanted into their surrogate in 2014; she sadly miscarried just a few weeks later, but the couple remained hopeful because they still had one embryo left.Their latest loss "was the toughest blow", Giuliana admitted. "It was a really hard time. "Nevertheless, the Fashion Police star remains hopeful about the possibility of expanding her family. "We are open to everything," she said. "I think adoption is a beautiful gift you're giving each other. "And it’s funny, I'm even more open to (adoption) than I was before. Because I think to myself, 'I love Duke so much, if I couldn't take care of him, I hope there would be someone else who would love him.'"

Even if they don’t have another child, Giuliana counts her blessings. "I have to remind myself that I'm very fortunate to have what I have," she previously told People. "It's really about knowing there's a bigger plan at play, so for some reason, it wasn't meant to happen this way. It'll all be clear one day soon. "Getting pregnant herself would be risky for the reality star, who has to take cancer-supressing medication following her 2011 breast cancer diagnosis, and subsequent double mastectomy. Giuliana and Bill struggled through three gruelling rounds of IVF before her cancer diagnosis – forcing them to put their dreams of starting a family on hold. The couple decided to use a surrogate to try for a baby, and were delighted to welcome son Duke in August 2012.
