David has since gone on to have the fastest account to reach five million followers. He tallied up the impressive following in just three days as fans tried to get a glimpse into his star-studded birthday celebrations in Marrakech.

The former England footballer made his debut on the site with a topless selfie which quickly received almost 900,000 likes. He has since gone on to share 15 photos alongside his famous friends and family, including a special shout out to his wife Victoria Beckham for making his 40th birthday "amazing".

The news will likely make David's eldest son Brooklyn Beckham envious. The teen has been trying to build up his followers on the photo sharing site in the last few weeks, and celebrated reaching an impressive two million followers on his dad's birthday.

The popular teen was previously left embarrassed by his dad in April when he was filming a video to celebrate gaining one million Instagram followers. Talking to the camera, Brooklyn declared: "I just reached a million followers," before his dad popped up in the background to boast, "I've got 52!"

Undeterred, Brooklyn launched a new Twitter account on Thursday and quickly amassed almost 50,000 followers despite only sending two tweets. As for the lucky people who he chose to follow, his mum Victoria made the cut along with actress Reese Witherspoon and his friend Chloë Grace Moretz.
