Beyoncé's passionate fan base were quick to react to the surprise album, with one fan tweeting: "Beyoncé makes women feel invincible there is literally nothing more important than that," while another wrote: "good morning Beyoncé destroyed me and I'm not even mad."

The Grammy-award winner, who collaborated with Led Zeppelin, The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, Diplo and Jack White for the album, has released 12 news songs accompanied by a short film, and has described the work as a "conceptual project."

Those who have listened to the album have been quick to point out that many of the songs on the album are focused on infidelity, with lyrics including: "this is your final warning, you know I give you life/you're gonna lose your wife," and "you can taste the dishonesty… it's on your breath," while the short film features Beyoncé smashing cars while angry with a cheating partner.

However, by the end of the film the star embraces Jay Z, dismissing speculation that she and her husband are separating despite her album's strong message about monogamy.

Beyoncé has stated that the album is based on: "every woman's journey to self-knowledge and healing."
