From Darcy to King George: why Hollywood's giving Colin the royal treatment
Brad Pitt is probably better known for his devastating looks, while Johnny Depp may have more raffish charisma.
But Colin Firth has proved he can hold his own against any of Hollywood’s most desirable leading men.
So what is it about the Hampshire-born star - who is now a prime contender for an Oscar and recently received a star on the Walk of Fame - that has hearts aflutter?
Colin’s path to glory started with the role of Mr Darcy in the BBC’s 1995 adaptation of Jane Austen classic Pride and Prejudice.
His brooding, misunderstood character won the nation over.
And many of his followers still remember with pleasure the iconic 'swimming' scene.
In it, the hero emerges from a lake, dripping wet, his shirt clinging to him, after taking a dip fully clothed, thereby revealing for the first time the passion lurking under the cool exterior.
