The 50-year-old actor’s ability to send himself up became apparent when he starred alongside Renee Zellwegger and Hugh Grant in the 2001 film Bridget Jones’ Diary, based on the book of the same name.
He took the role of a barrister, whose fractious relationship with the eponymous heroine turned into love.
Such was author Helen Fielding's obsession with Colin's character in Pride & Prejudice, she named Bridget's lover Mark Darcy as a tribute.
She also described him as being physically exactly like the actor in real life.
