Cher 

Nicknamed the Goddess of Pop, Cher is known for her contralto singing voice and for continuously reinventing both her music and image. Cher became famous in the 1960s as one half of pop act Sonny and Cher. She disguised her nervousness by looking at Sonny - who was her husband - later commenting that she sang to the people through him. In 1969 Cher gave birth to their first child Chastity Bono, but their relationship broke down, with Cher filing for divorce in 1976

Before the couple went their seperate ways they teamed up for TV programme The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour. The show was a hit and garnered 12 Emmy nominations throughout its run with Cher winning a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. Cher soon returned to music, and joined the disco craze of the late 70s. In the 1980s she decided to focus again on her acting career.

The star appeared on Broadway in the play Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean before playing opposite Meryl Streep in Silkwood, which resulted in Cher's first Oscar nomination. She went on to star in several now classic 80s films including The Witches of Eastwick and Moonstruck, for which she won an Academy Award for Best Actress, before taking the lead role in Mermaids. She took creative control for the movie and recorded two songs for the film's soundtrack. One of the tracks, The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss), topped the UK charts for five weeks and reached the top five in most European countries. In 1999 Cher made a hugely successful comeback with Believe, a dance track which captured the disco era of the 1970s. It became the best-selling recording of 1998 and 1999, and Cher's biggest hit to date. She then announced she was to embark on a farewell tour which would run for 49 dates. Due to its popularity it was extended several times. In 2008 Cher began a three-year, 200-performance residency at the Colosseum in Caesars Palace, Las Vegas.In recent years, Cher has been a guest judge on the US version of The Voice, and has recently announced she will collaborate with Wu-Tang Clan on their upcoming album.
