John Mayer first learnt to play guitar at age 13 after he saw Marty McFly play the instrument in Back to the Future and by 19 he had enrolled at the prestigious Berklee School of Music.

After two semesters however John was persuaded to move to Atlanta. With a friend, he began to perform around the city, and after an appearance in 2000 at the annual South By Southwest Festival, John had the attention of launch label Aware Records.

By 2001 John was working with Columbia Records and his debut album, Room for Squares, was released, spawning several hit singles and leading to John's first Grammy award.

His second album in 2003 went in at number one, and two years after winning his first Grammy John won two more, beating Alicia Keys and Kanye West for Song of the Year. In 2006, John revealed that he thought Alicia should have won for If I Ain't Got You and admitted he had broken the award in half and Alicia had the top half.

After his second album John changed direction musically, and began to collaborate with rap and jazz artists including Kanye West and Herbie Hancock. He created a new band called the John Mayer Trio, who toured and were nominated for a Grammy for their album Try!, and his third album, Continuum, showcased the changes he had made, focusing on blues-based pop music.

John is known for his continually changing musical styles, and by the time his fifth album, Born and Raised, was released, he was working with Americana and folk music. Born and Raised also saw the return of John to the public eye following two years absense due to throat surgery in 2011.

John is also a strong activist, and in 2002 founded the Back To You fund, a nonprofit organisation that focuses on fundraising for the arts, education, and talent development. He also regularly performs at benefits and telethons, including rallies to raise awareness of global warming.

The 37-year-old has dated some of Hollywood's most gorgeous women, including Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Simpson, and Taylor Swift. In 2013 he dated Katy Perry, before splitting with her and reuniting in 2014.
