Kanye West says 'voices in my head' made him crash Beck's Grammy speech

Kanye West had a good reason for heading up stage when Beck won album of the year at the Grammysthe voices in his head told him to do it. The rapper opened up about his decision to gate-crash Beck's big moment during an interview with Ryan Seacrest this week, and said he had intended it to be a joking reference to the time he interrupted Taylor Swift at the 2009 awards. "Right when that happened, everybody was looking at me and then people started screaming, 'Kanye! Kanye! Go do it!' Ok, that didn't really happen. These were voices in my head," Kanye told Ryan on his KIIS FM radio show on Wednesday.

Kanye West has spoken about his decision to crash Beck's Grammys speech

"So the voices in my head told me go and then I just walked up like halfway up the stage." He continued, "What I really wanted to do (was) just joke around about what had happened before (with Taylor), but I just really didn't want to take away from Beck's moment or the time he's having to talk. "The Grammys, they play music really quick no matter who you are and everything. So I didn't want anything to take away from his screen time." Kanye went on to describe comments he made immediately after the show about Beck not respecting artistry as "mis-wording". "I was asked my opinion and I was given a platform," he said. "And when given a platform, it's very hard as we know – and I'm going to talk in third person like I'm a crazy person – but it's very hard for Kanye West to not be very true and vocal to what he feels."

Kanye raised eyebrows when he headed up on stage during Beck's big moment

He added, "I think it came off the wrong way, and that was mis-wording on my part because obviously Beck is one of the most respected artists and respects artistry. "But I felt – and this is my opinion and he's his own man and he's not wrong and we'll still go play basketball and stuff unless he doesn't want to – but I felt that even though the Grammys sometimes gives awards to people who you wouldn't think should win the category, as a respect to artists, we mention the other artist's name in our speech. That was the point I was making about it." Beck, himself, has previously spoken about Kanye's stunt. "I was just so excited he was coming up," he told reporters following Sunday's ceremony. "You can't please everybody, man. I still love him and think he's genius. I aspire to do what he does."
