Madrid offers a wealth of historical sights, giving David and Victoria have a feast of culture at their disposal.
As Becks travels south from Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu stadium, he passes a series of monuments
and fountains before arriving at the famous Prado museum, home to the works of Goya and Velazquez. In the nearby Reina Sofía he can peruse
Picasso's magnificent painting entitled Guernica along with myriad other modern art
masterpieces.
Afterwards the footie ace and his wife could take a stroll
through Retiro Park, the site of the "Crystal Palace" where a succession of
Bourbon Kings once resided. The couple might also pay a visit to the 2,000-room Royal Palace where the current monarch King Juan Carlos maintains an office. The Renaissance structure,
which was originally built for Charles III in the 1700s, overlooks the city's vast Casa de Campo park.
And then there's the grandiose Plaza Mayor, the
17th-century arcaded square in the heart of the city which in summer is alive with people sipping cool drinks at outdoor cafés, and which hosts concerts, fairs and numerous cultural events throughout the year. |
