Tom Cruise earned his pilot's licence in 1994, though many will remember his onscreen aviation skills as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in the movie Top Gun some years earlier. However, while his 5ft 7in stature didn't prevent him earning a private qualification, the actor is actually an inch too short to be a Navy pilot. When he split from Nicole Kidman, Tom gave up possession of their houses in Los Angeles and Sydney, but held onto his three aeroplanes – a £19.8 million Gulfstream jet, a £849,000 twin-engined Beech F90 passenger plane and a £70,700 Pitts S-2B. The latter is a small single-engine plane often used by Hollywood studios to film aerial scenes, which put in an appearance in Mission Impossible 2. Although the actor had the legend "Sweet Nic" on the nose of the Gulfstream replaced with his daughter's name after the break-up, he and Nicole agreed that she could call on him whenever she found herself in need of some aerial transport.
