Among celebrity pilots Harrison is a cut above the rest, having qualified to fly not just planes, but also helicopters, which are considered more difficult by many aviation experts. The Indiana Jones star has distinguished himself by taking part in a number of tricky mountain rescue missions, but he gave Hollywood a fright in 1999 when he made an emergency landing in a Bell 206. The aircraft hit the ground hard and rolled over onto its side, but fortunately neither he nor his co-pilot were hurt. The following year he had another accident, crashing his single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza in Nebraska. The actor was flying from New Jersey to Jackson, Wyoming, and intended to make a simple re-fuelling stop, but a sudden gust of wind blew him off the runway. Like Tom, Harrison has also taken the controls on screen; in 1998's Six Days Seven Nights he played a charming aviator who crashes on a tropical island. |
