Long before he burst onto our screens in Saturday Night Fever John was fascinated by flying and even persuaded the girls in his neighbourhood to put on their Brownie uniforms and play flight attendant while he piloted his own backyard "aeroplane". His childhood ambitions came to the greatest possible fruition last year when he earned his wings for a 747 – the popular passenger airliner. It was an aviation highpoint for the star, who is already known as an extremely experienced pilot. Over the course of a 32-year career at the controls he has qualified to captain myriad different jets. After purchasing a Boeing B707 from Qantas four years ago, he trained to fly it before going on an epic 13-city tour as a Qantas "Ambassador at large". The itinerary involved 80 flying hours and covered more than 35,000 miles. |
