Most rock bands have to book an awful lot of plane tickets when they go on tour. The boys from Blur don't suffer that problem, however, as both bassist Alex James and drummer Dave Rowntree are fully qualified pilots. And Alex, who has dubbed himself "Captain", bought a twin-engined Cessna for £200,000 in 2000. Long-distance flying can be rather taxing, however, as Alex discovered when he and Dave flew 1,500 miles to Morocco to record an album with Fatboy Slim. The two-day journey left him feeling dazed and confused. "Dave and I both had thousand yard stares when we landed at Marrakesh," he admitted. "Passing down the strait of Gibraltar with Spain's craggy toasted mountains on the right, Africa loomed, dark green and inviting. It really loomed. It can do that." Perhaps it was just as well singer David Albarn and Norman Cook decided to take a regular, commercial flight instead of travelling with their fellow musicans.
