| Formula One ace Eddie Irvine knows more than most about travelling at speed, but it seems that taking his grand prix car to over 200 mph simply wasn't enough to satisfy him After the Ulster-born racer decided to train as a pilot he soon found that, by trading his Jaguar cockpit for a jet cockpit, he could easily leave his competitors behind. In 1999 he proved that his abilities in the air match his talent on the track by flying with the RAF's elite display team, the Red Arrows. Afterwards he said it was "like nothing else I have ever experienced". "It wasn't at all like driving in a Grand Prix. I thought driving a Formula One car was thrilling, but this was amazing. The g-forces in the Red Arrows last much longer – they seem to go on forever and I could easily lose track of where we were and what we were doing." |
