On the big screen Sharon Stone is best-known for her villainous femme fatales, but in real life she is more angel of mercy than wicked witch. The actress has become well-known for her tireless efforts to help combat Aids and extreme poverty around the world. And earlier this year she famously disrupted a plenary session of the World Economic Forum when Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa was appealing for money to buy mosquito nets for his country's children. "President Mkapa needs help today because people are dying in his country today and that's not OK with me," she announced before pledging $10,000 of her own money if other delegates would do the same. Within five minutes the Basic Instinct actress had raised $1.5 million to buy bed nets for Tanzanian kids. |
