Despite having grown up in the lap of English luxury, Jemima faced the prospect of bridging two cultures with enthusiasm. And she was soon ensconced in Pakistan with her new husband, who was launching a political career.

The newlywed immediately immersed herself in her new life, learning Urdu and embracing the customs of her husband's home country. Years later, she reflected that she had "no problem" adjusting to the differences, including donning traditional garb and scarves. "Imran and I have a balanced relationship," she explained. "I cover my hair for cultural reasons, for my own comfort… I'm careful to be respectful of the culture."
