Adnan Khashoggi is said to have paid Soraya £525 million in 1982 – a figure that was totally eclipsed by media giant Sumner Redstone’s reported £1 billion payment to his wife of 55 years, Phyllis, in 2002.
Multi-billionaire media tycoon Rupert Murdoch divorced his wife Anna after 32 years in 1999, for an undisclosed sum in an agreement described as “amicable”. And the most expensive split in history is currently under negotiation as the Sultan of Brunei prepares to release a large chunk of his (Forbes-estimated) £7.8 billion fortune to former air stewardess Mariam Abdul Aziz (nee Bell).
