MADONNA
Madonna's £9-million estate Ashcombe was bought on a whim in 1998. Discovering that Cecil Beaton's former Wiltshire retreat was up for sale she arranged a visit, imagining a pleasant day out and nothing more.

But the magic of the country pile ensnared the singer and her husband Guy Ritchie. Aside from the obvious tranquillity of the location, the house seemed to symbolise something fundamental about their relationship. "Ashcombe is a reflection of me and Guy, because it reflects our willingness to make a commitment," said the Material Girl.

The purchase marked Madonna's transformation from brash pop icon to lady of the manor. Nowhere is this lifestyle shift more apparent than in the décor, with cosy sofas and family silver rubbing shoulders with state-of-the-art sound systems.
