MADONNA

When the queen of reinvention boogied her way back to the top of the charts in a violet leotard and a flicked-back hairstyle that owed more than a little to Seventies star Farrah Fawcett, many of her peers thought she had finally overestimated her own trend-setting potential. Madonna is no regular pop star, however, and it wasn't long before the hip young things of London and New York were wearing cut-off tights and sparkling oversize belts to emulate her latest look.

The 47-year-old continued to take inspiration from retro chic when she chose a vintage-style candyfloss pink gown for the Vanity Fair Oscar-night party. The figure-hugging creation with plunging neckline clearly had its origins rooted in an earlier decade, but with her dance-honed physique and impeccable sense of what works, the Material Girl carried it off with her usual aplomb.
