Wales has also produced its fair share of showbiz legends. Perhaps the best known of these is pop veteran Tom Jones, who makes no secret of his patriotism. For the past five decades the tanned crooner has been singing the praises of his home country to music fans all over the world. And although the demands of his career mean he spends most of his time in LA these days, Tom insists his heart still lies in his native Pontypridd. "I haven't really left," he says. "I carry Wales around with me."

When it comes to big screen veterans, the principality is represented by none other than Sir Anthony Hopkins. The highly respected performer who has won more awards than most actors could dream of was born in the town of Margam, near Port Talbot in West Glamorgan in 1937.

Equally successful is top-selling Welsh animated character Superted. Initially commissioned by fledgling Welsh TV channel S4C, the teddy hero was licensed by Disney, re-made by Hanna-Barbera and syndicated across the globe after picking up a Bafta award in the late Eighties
