Peggy Porschen shows some real cake chic

In Cake Chic, Peggy Porschen shows us the ins and outs of making beautiful cakes and cookies

08 JULY 2009

Peggy Porschen is best known as cake maker to the stars, having made spectacular cakes for the likes of Elton John, Stella McCartney and Madonna. Her third book, Cake chic, sees her teaching the art of fine cake and cookie making to the home-user.

The book is essentially a guide to creating these glorious looking things, but is definitely one for the aspirational chef – although children working with adults might like to cook some of the more fun cakes and biscuits. This is cooking for those with patience, too, as there are multiple stages to each creation.

Recipes vary from the very modern 'dots and bows' cakes for a wedding to the retro classics like 'French fancies' (which artist Damien Hurst had supplied for an auction of his work in Sotheby’s) and there is something here for every occasion, from Christenings to vintage-themed parties.

There is also a great basics section at the back of the book with simple cake and biscuit recipes – essentially the bases for the rest of the creations. This keeps the recipe length in the actual book to a minimum. Given the amount of ingredients and equipment needed for some this is rather a blessing as they could seem quite overwhelming. It also features a section on techniques for things like icing – quite useful for the would-be cake maker extraordinaire.

Photographs are both illustrative and beautiful – with some recipes having photo-guides to help you get the perfect results. Overall a book for those with patience and a passion for cake-decorating and probably a bit of time on their hands.

Cake Chic by Peggy Porschen, published by Quadrille, £20.
