Je sais cuisiner or I know how to cook was first published in France in 1932. Rather like the Italian cookbook, The Silver Spoon, is to the Italians, this has been a well-kept secret and is a must-have for all French households where a well-thumbed copy can always be found.

Ginette Mathiot, the author, was the domestic goddess of French cookery. She published more than 30 recipe book and I know how to cook is her greatest work.

For the first time the book has been published in English and contains more than 1,200 recipes for every occasion including incredible recipes for all the French classics, from croque monsieur to cassoulet.

The recipes in this translation have been updated to suit the modern reader and are a great guide to getting the best out of good ingredients. It is essential reading for any fan of French food.
