29 APRIL 2011 Some cookery books stand the test of time and deserve a place in the modern kitchen. These food heroes have been brought back by publishing house Quadrille and are aimed at the cookery enthusiast.

These books were generally only available from specialist collectors at a serious cost but have now been redesigned keeping the original text and stand up as a worthy addition to your collection.



Eliza Acton’s Modern Cookery for Private Families was first published in 1845 and stood as precursor to the famous Mrs Beeton and, according to many, is the superior volume.

It’s essentially a primer, a weighty tome that sets out the principles of modern domestic cookery. Thirty four chapters will set you in good stead to deal with virtually every type of food and occasion – although possibly not the TV dinner!

The basics are here too – frying fish and roasting meat are covered amply alongside classic, simple recipes and guides to how to choose various cuts of meat and vegetables.
