Ethical eating: 'Switch one for welfare' in the supermarket this week

19 JUNE 2012

Many of us have already opted out of buying eggs from caged hens, turning instead towards the more ethical, labelled alternative.

This week you can go one step further by choosing other higher welfare Freedom Food labelled ingredients - such as chicken, pork, or salmon, that has been reared in a healthier, happier environment.

The RSPCA's farm animal welfare charity, Freedom Food, which works towards raising awareness of farm animal welfare, has a host of famous faces backing their campaigns.

Simon Cowell, Ricky Gervais and Alesha Dixon are just a few of the celebrities involved and committed to improving animal welfare.

They’re asking us to ‘Switch one for welfare’ in the hope that if enough people make small changes to the products they put in their shopping trolley, it’ll make a big difference for farm animal welfare.

To celebrate Farm Animal Week, the lovely Liz McClarnon of Atomic Kitten fame brings us a Chicken and Guacamole Salad recipe that is speedy and bursting with colour and flavour.

Tom and Henry Herbert, the Fabulous Baker Brothers duo, delight in the recent Scotch Egg renaissance and give us their recipe for the ultimate on-the-go snack.

So look out for the all-important blue label this week and from here on in. For more information visit: rspca.org.uk/freedomfood
