Taste the Caribbean with rum cocktail recipes

04 JANUARY 2013 Often originally known as the drink of pirates, the modern day rum now holds a much more refined fame amongst mixologists and cocktail fans. No longer swigged from a bottle or poached by the barrel, mixed drinks and cocktails made with delicious dark rum are rapidly growing in popularity.

Many of us are familiar with white rum but the deeper flavour and aroma of dark rum gives an extra depth to a cocktail. The smooth, sweet taste of a good dark rum cannot be beaten and, when mixed in the right way and with the right ingredients, can create divine tipples such as the mojito and daquiri.

The tropical coral Caribbean island of Barbados has long symbolised luxury, glamour and revelry for centuries. This haven of white sand, sun-drenched fields of sugar cane and with its own source of 96% natural pure water is also the birthplace of rum. The oldest brand in existence, Mount Gay Rum, has been produced in Barbados since 1703.

Lovingly fashioned from rich sugar cane, with the coral-filtered water native to the island, it is a sumptuous, inimitable expression of the Barbadian art of living and the perfect ingredient for rum cocktails.

Bring the magic of tropical Barbados to any celebration with some of these fabulous rum cocktails, with each cocktail recipe being simple enough to make at home and guaranteed to impress the most discerning guests you entertain this year.

Created by Bajan mixologist and Mount Gay Rum brand ambassador Miguel Smith, "these cocktails are perfectly suited to entertaining friends at home. Each one brings authentic Bajan style to a classic cocktail serves."
