Whitstable Oyster Festival – 27 July to 2 August, Kent

This week-long celebration of the quaint Kentish seaside town's most famous export offers a host of activities celebrating its long history with this aphrodisiacal delicacy. Running since 1985, the festival traditionally celebrates the oystermen's holiday – native oysters are only farmed in months with the letter 'r' but pacific rock oysters are farmed year-round and it is these that are available during the festival. The Harbour Food Fair showcases the finest local produce from surrounding farms. Foodies and families alike can soak up the carnival atmosphere and enjoy events such as the Mud Tug (a tug of war) and the hotly contested oyster eating competition. Music, cultural and community events are offered in the charming town throughout the week and the celebrations culminate in a spectacular firework display over the sea.
