As any girl worth her salt knows, you can't just fling on your regular threads if invited to dine with the cruise ship's captain. So it's welcome news that several designers, including Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel, have got just such an eventuality covered.

The German fashion maestro's Cruise Collection 2005 abounds with classic, ocean-going elegance. Diaphanous black dresses in lace and tulle are the perfect solution for evenings spent wining and dining on deck, while tweedy, three-quarter-length sleeve jackets teamed with matching caps are ideal for breezy daytimes. And for the cocktail hour? Karl proposes a slender sheath in tangerine silk.

Elsewhere in the colllection jackets take on a nautical flavour with epaulettes and embossed buttons, while the "Coco" print appears on everything from blousons to skirts. Meanwhile, the fashion house's Parisian home is evident throughout, stamped on accessories and on charms bearing familiar images from the city's legendary skyline.
