It's not easy to keep smelling sweet in the face of life's many challenges, but if there's one man who consistently seems to manage the feat it must surely be David Beckham. And one thing there can be little doubt about is that the England skipper always looks his best when he's appearing in photographs off the pitch.

It will come as small surprise, therefore, that when the footie ace met up with renowned celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz to shoot an advertisement for his new scent, the result was nothing short of spectacular.

With the sinister clouds of a passing storm in the background, Becks makes a smouldering Heathcliffe-like impression in the new picture. The Real Madrid star obviously wanted to show a darker side to his character in the photo, which is being used to promote his cologne Instinct.

The fragrance has already been launched in his adoptive homeland of Spain, but British fans will have to wait a little bit longer as it won't be hitting the shelves of UK stores until later this year. David's latest venture, which is being produced in collaboration with cosmetics giant Coty, is a sensual mix of orange, mandarin, Italian bergamot and white amber flavours. It forms part of a new range of toiletries which also includes aftershave, exfoliating gel, shampoo and deodorant.
