American glam meets British style at NY gala

New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art took on a distinctly British feel on Monday night when a galaxy of stars turned out to celebrate the UK's top designers. Trendsetter Victoria Beckham rubbed shoulders with fellow style queens such as Liz Hurley and Sarah Jessica Parker as the Anglomania bash got underway in the heart of Manhattan.

With a roll call of America's favourite stars turning out to pay tribute to their British cousins, it was no surprise to see the big names in patriotic colours. Most of the A-list guests decided to stick to red and white - although blue was given the cold shoulder – for the glitzy event.

Jennifer Lopez was looking characteristically stunning in an off-the-shoulder white gown when she arrived with husband Marc Anthony. And Italian designer Donatella Versace, making her entrance with Rupert Everett on one arm and Lenny Kravitz on the other, was equally dazzling in a strapless silk creation. Among the other stars who opted for ivory hues were Naomi Campbell, who sashayed up the red carpet in a spectacular oriental-style creation, and Kim Bassinger, who went for a classically-cut coat dress.

There was nothing neutral about the frock Charlize Theron was wearing, though. The Oscar-winner sent waiting photographers intro a frenzy of activity when she rolled up in deep red couture gown from Dior. The French fashion house's creative director, John Galliano, meanwhile lived up to his flamboyant reputation with a red polka-dot waistcoat over gold lamé trousers. Brazilian beauty Gisele Bundchen was also looking rosy, in figure-hugging pink, while Sarah Jessica Parker made an unforgettable impression with a one-shouldered tartan affair by Scottish 'enfant terrible' Alexander McQueen.

Victoria Beckham was the epitome of high-octane glamour in a scarlet Roland Mouret number, but the-mum-of-three rejected suggestions she was Britain's most fashionable woman. "For me, the biggest style icon in the world has to be Kate Moss," said the England skipper's wife. "She always looks fantastic."

The target of her praise bucked the trend at Monday night's gala with a fitted black jacket and tight satin trousers. And she wasn't the only one who decided to go it alone, as Sienna Miller, who co-hosted the bash with Vogue editor Anna Wintour, was sporting a gold sequinned mini-dress by Burberry.
