What better place to get a heads up on next season's trends than at the British Fashion Awards?

And according to the country's most stylish stars, including Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham, the colour to be seen in is black, black, black.

Despite their different approaches to clothing, Kate and Posh both arrived at the star-studded ceremony on Wednesday wearing floor-length jet gowns.

The similarities didn’t end there – both ladies also had long trains on their dresses and hair swept up into tight 'dos for the occasion.

Victoria, who arrived alone after attending a family funeral with husband David, wore one of her own creations from her Spring/Summer 2010 collection – a silk crepe Eighties-style dress with crystal embroidery on the shoulder pads.

Kate, escorted by beau Jamie Hince, wore a sheer tiered number that she teamed with a black blazer.

The duo headed up a host of beauties clad in black, from Eva Herzigova, Princess Beatrice and Bond girl Olga Kurylenko, to Erin O'Connor, Yasmin LeBon and prime minister's wife Sarah Brown.

It was a particularly special night for Croydon-born Kate.

She was awarded the London 25 trophy – an honour voted for by the public that recognises "an individual who embodies the spirit of London and is an international ambassador for London as a leading creative fashion capital."

Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall's daughter, 17-year-old Georgia May, beat off stiff competition from Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Daisy Lowe to be named model of the year.

And Burberry's Christopher Bailey - named best designer - and also picked up the designer brand of the year gong.

Dior's John Galliano – born in Gibraltar – picked up the outstanding achievement award.
