'She's brilliant': Giles Deacon on dressing 'good mate' Victoria Beckham

06 MARCH 2013

London-based fashion designer Giles Deacon is launching a new range of jewellery with shopping channel QVC. To celebrate the collaboration, HELLO! Online sat down for cup of tea with the fashion maestro, who discussed designing Abbey Clancy's wedding dress, jewellery designing and his good friend Victoria Beckham.

"Dressing Victoria for the Olympics closing ceremony was absolutely brilliant…
She's an good mate of mine, I've worked with her a number of times over the years and we've made a few pieces. She's great – she knew what she wanted, which is always a good starting point, and she knew what she didn’t want.

She's lovely, absolutely adorable…
We've made a few pieces together over the years and she's so fun. Plus, she's got great taste and a good eye – she knows what she looks best in better than anyone else. She had a few fittings when she was over and it was great and I was really pleased with how she looked as well.

She didn't want to wear her own line for the ceremony…
I think she felt it might have been a bit conceited to wear Victoria Beckham and she wanted to support another British talent which I thought was really sweet of her.

I'm not sure if she'll move her fashion shows to London…
From a business perspective, I think the States is more suited to her so market-wise New York is probably more logical. It is difficult though – there's always the place you want to show for sentimental reasons and then a place you should choose to show for business reasons. For her, I think it's finding the balance within that. But she is a smart girl, she'll work out what's right for her. The important thing is that she works with a lot of people in Britain. She employs a good team of people here and I think that's the more important picture within it.

Designing jewellery meant my label could be more accessible…
Let's be honest, not everybody can afford to buy £5,000 dresses, so the jewellery is a nice of way of getting the Giles product out into the world and introduce it to people not familiar with the label. QVC is a really good partner to help us do that.

I like designing jewellery…
It's quite quick and it's fun – this line is a bit tongue in cheek and it's got some fun about it but they're beautifully made so it is good quality. I've always liked historic jewellery that’s got a kind of quirkiness or playfulness to it; I like that it's not too serious. You want something really beautiful and nice that you can swing around your neck and get your mates to comment on. It cheers you up as well – I think there's so much misery going on in the world for people that a nice piece of good jewellery for a Friday night out cheers you up.

I've known Cara Delevingne for years...
She walked in our London Fashion Week show last month. She's a great kid, really good and I absolutely adore her. She is handling the pressure very well. I had a talk to her about it and I think she's got it all sorted out – she's smart and bright.

I couldn't choose a favourite model…
I've been lucky enough to have so many amazing girls walk for me from Linda [Evangelista] to Kristen [McMenamy]. And my old mates like Karen Nelson.

I was really excited to dress Kerry Washington at the Django Unchained premiere…
It was extraordinary. I was delighted with how it worked out. I've been really lucky – I've worked with lots of amazing women from Cate Blanchett to Kylie. I have an ongoing relationship with a lot of them.

It took three months to make Abbey Clancy's wedding dress…
A lot of work went into it, and I think she looked extraordinary, really lovely. She is great to work with, such fun and her and Peter are a lovely couple.

I love showing in London…
I'd never say never about not moving anywhere else but London's got such a good thing going on at the moment. With Chris [Christopher Kane],Jonathan [Saunders], Richard [Nicoll] and Louise [Gray], there are some really individual and strong collections. We're all good mates as well which is nice. You don’t really get that so much of that in Paris or Milan."

The Libertine by Giles Deacon jewellery collection is available to buy via qvcuk.com from 10th March. Tune in to see Giles Deacon's one hour live launch show on QVC on 10th March at 3pm.
