"The ancient etiquette is that you wear a tiara for the first time on the occasion of your marriage. This is because they symbolise the loss of innocence and the crowning of love” – Geoffrey Munn, jeweller and author of Tiaras Past And Present
Time was that a simple upswept hairstyle and pearl jewellery to complement the pale hue of the dress were the norm. These days bridal accessories include exuberant headgear, sparkling hairpins tucked into freely flowing locks, à la Jennifer Aniston when she tied the knot with Brad Pitt, and tiaras. Madonna favoured the latter when she borrowed a diamond version from Asprey and Garrard for her wedding to Guy Ritchie. The traditional veil is often replaced by something exotic like a lace mantilla, while minimalist jewellery has given way to more unusual and eye-catching designs. “People are no longer wearing just the simple strand of pearls,” says bridal accessories designer Karen Fenaroli. “They might branch out and wear a gorgeous platinum necklace or pearl and platinum earrings or a beautiful pair of shoes… They're really expressing their own personal style.” |
