A COLOURFUL OUTLOOK
“We are seeing an increase in colour, ranging from deep ivory, lime green, hail blue. It is an expression of individuality. That is the most important thing” - Bridal gown designer Michelle Roth

White has become such a synonymous colour for wedding gowns in modern times it is easy to forget that the trend – symbolising a virgin bride – only took off in the reign of Queen Victoria. Before then, wedding gowns could be of any hue. In Roman times brides wore yellow veils to protect them from evil spirits, and red – symbolising good luck – remains a favourite choice in China. In recent years, coloured gowns have undergone something of a revival in the West as well. These days it can be hard to distinguish a wedding dress from an evening gown as modern brides opt for soft, delicate pastels over the traditional white, cream and ivory. For her 1998 wedding to newspaperman Phil Bronstein, for example, Sharon Stone chose a pale pink chiffon affair by Vera Wang.
