"Brides and grooms are adding lots of personality to their weddings beyond writing their own vows" – Deputy editor of In Style magazine Charla Lawhon
With the lavish meringues associated with church nuptials rarely translating well to register office ceremonies, many new brides opting for a civil service are choosing their wedding outfit with the venue in mind. Floor-length silhouettes and full skirts are replaced by elegant knee-length dresses or tailored two-piece suits in soft creams, pastel shades and neutral prints, all stylishly accessorised with elaborate hats and strappy footwear. Thrice-wed Monegasque royal Princess Caroline epitomised the look when she wore a duck-egg blue suit for her wedding to Prince Ernst August of Hanover in 1997.
