FORTIES HEROINES
For a woman whose burlesque shows require the minimum of clothing, Dita Von Teese is surprisingly particular about her appearance. A porcelain doll of a figure, she reveres the Forties as a time when "you could get the hat and handbag to match your shoes, and have your name embroidered on all of it".

The performer, who's married to shock rocker Marilyn Manson, has amassed a wardrobe of vintage clothes. And not content with just wearing the garments, Dita often finishes off her outfits with the era's flawless makeup and authentic period hairstyles.

Australian star Cate Blanchett isn't quite such a Forties devotee, but two roles - her French Resistance fighter in Charlotte Gray and her portrayal of Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator - did have a lasting effect on her sartorial choices. The actress has been known to opt for tailored skirt suits with nipped-in waists, teamed with the decade's strappy pumps.
