The story:

Actor and pin-up du jour Josh Hartnett burst onto the scene in Pearl Harbor as the pilot who stole Kate Beckinsale from Ben Affleck. Black Hawk Down, his next war flick, however, has none of the Tinseltown sentimentality that dogged Pearl Harbor.

“In a firefight, no one has a moment to look cool, to smoke a cigarette and say ‘Hey! Look at me’,” says co-star Tom Sizemore. “This is not a Hollywood movie. It is a very, very serious movie.” With a very serious theme.

Black Hawk Down, directed by Gladiator’s Ridley Scott, re-creates with chilling clarity the 15-hour battle of October 3, 1993, in which 18 American soldiers perished in battle in the Somali capital of Mogadishu.

“It’s really good,” says Josh of the picture. “It’s really very good. I think it’s going to be – if this means anything – it’s probably going to be nominated.” For an Oscar, he means. And with critics raving about the film’s uncompromising intensity and lack of flag waving, it seems his immodesty could be justified.

Nominated for five American Film Institute Awards, Black Hawk Down opens in wide release on both sides of the Atlantic on January 18.
