Signs sees the return of the filmmaker behind 1999’s surprise hit The Sixth Sense, director and writer M Night Shyamalan. And like The Sixth Sense, Signs is about beliefs.

The film focuses on a family of four – farmer Graham Hess (Mel Gibson), his two young children (Abigail Breslin and Rory Culkin) and his brother Merrill (Joaquin Phoenix) - who, while still mourning Graham’s late wife, find lines and circles inexplicably carved into their Pennsylvania cornfields. As former reverend Graham journeys to find out the truth behind the crop circles, his faith is tested to the limit.

Shyamalan says he wrote Signs with Mel, a director in his own right and one of the most powerful men in Hollywood, in mind. "I think we’ve got very different directing styles and that helped, because we were intrigued by each other's process,” he says.

Signs, currently playing in the US, hits UK screens on September 13, 2002
