Steven Spielberg's latest film, Catch Me If You Can, is one of those stranger-than-fiction tales that you might brand absurd were it not for the fact that it's a true story.
Leonardo DiCaprio plays Frank Abagnale Jr, also known as "The Skywayman", who was an infamous figure in law-enforcement circles and earned the dubious status of being the youngest ever entry on the FBI's Most Wanted list. A talented forger and fraudster, he enjoyed a five-year crime spree during which he adopted the personas of an airline pilot, a doctor, a professor and even an Assistant Attorney General. The film is Leo's first major release since The Beach and marks his comeback after a troubled two years during which many thought his career was drawing to a premature close.
Tom Hanks plays FBI agent Carl Hanratty who eventually caught up with him but, having developed such respect for the young criminal's talents, helped him get out of prison in order to work for the agency as a consultant. Producer Walter Parks says the film is not just a crime caper and that there's a more profound emotional level to it: "It depicts the kind of family psychology from which Frank Abagnale comes, his relationship with his father – with the ironic twist that the agent who is chasing him becomes a sort of surrogate father figure."
